Genevieve Waters-Ewing is married to a man she doesn't love, and didn't agree to marry.
The scoundrel dragged her to the altar, and now everything is going to change. In a split second decision, she runs away, and stows aboard a chuck wagon that's leaving on a cattle drive, heading north to Montana. She doesn't know where she'll go, or what she'll do, she only knows one thing - she has to leave Fort Worth, Texas.
Thomas O'Reilly's finally got the chance to prove himself to his Pa. After finding gold in Montana Territory, he travels to Texas to buy a herd of longhorns to take back north with him, where demand for beef is high. Everything is going his way until he discovers a beautiful, young woman asleep in the back of his chuck wagon.
A woman on the trail is bad for business, especially in a group of rough and rowdy cowboys. Will she ruin everything he's worked so hard for? Or will she be the one thing he really needs?
Follow their journey, from Texas to Montana Territory, where challenges lurk around every corner, and love is forged in the heat of battle.

Ah!! Another Vivi Holt masterpiece!!~. Although I have never been a cowgirl (or cowboy), I now know more about life on a cattle drive. As a cook and food scientist, I sympathize with cooking on an outdoor fire in huge cast iron pots and Dutch ovens with water carried from streams, contaminated by no-telling-what. Bathing was a luxury, and life was tough for men and women. "Of Peaks and Prairies" is a beautiful story of two women on a cattle drive through hazard after hazard on the way to Paradise Valley, Montana. Oh, by the way, the cattle are Texas longhorns There are some very heartbreaking moments, but there are joyful ones too. This book may be historically true; I do not know. I am planning a trip to Paradise Valley when weather permits. I may need a sleigh and reindeer to pull it. I have no reservations in recommending this book.Product details

Of Peaks and Prairies Paradise Valley Book 1 edition by Vivi Holt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was filled with funny and determined incidents. Genevieve was very determined that she was not going to stay with her step-father or the man who claimed her as his wife, it was fun reading to get her all the way to a real wedding.
This is a well written romance with great characters, enough action and romance to keep you reading. I also enjoyed the multiple character stories instead of just focusing on the hero and heroine. Well done and I am looking forward to the next one.
For a sweet clean western, with adventure and trials and Indian raids, Soldiers, it's got it all. It's got you hoping for that happy ever after, while keeping you wondering it almost the end. Good job Miss Holt, can't wait to read the next one.
Vivi has done it again!!!! You start reading and you can't put your book down -- in my case it was my Fire. I take it to bed with me so I can continue reading this story. Now I'm waiting for Paradise Valley Book 2. Can't wait to get it. Vivi Holt is a great author. I loved her Cutter Creek stories also. You'll love Of Peaks and Prairies like I did. Since it's still on my , maybe when I get a few more Vivi stories read, I'll read Book 1 again.
This was an enjoyable romance! It was fun to read about cowboys driving a big herd from Texas to Montana. I liked how Tom and Genny fell in love but still wanted to do the right thing. Many of the secondary characters were interesting as well. The kisses were lovely and passionate but it didn’t have anything else. But showing that a healthy passion for one’s spouse is right and good was great to read.
I really enjoyed this book. It has excitement, struggles, & hope. I believe it gives a reasonably accurate description of life in the time and place the story is set. I found this story to be clean and uplifting without having to wade through an abundance of religious beliefs. Some books in this genre seem more interested in trying to convert the reader than to tell a story, this is not like that, it tells a clean, interesting story. I recommend this book.
I was expecting more from this title. It was a slow story, not much encouragement to turn another page. Ginny was a whiny, tearful girl and Tom didn't t have much of a personality. Plenty was said about the drive and other sub characters, but not enough about the stars to make them warm and readable. Sorry.
